Tardigrades (also known as water bears, space bears, or moss piglets), are perhaps the most indestructible creatures on the planet. These water-dwelling, eight-legged micro-animals can survive extreme temperatures (−458 °F to 300 °F), the pressure of deep sea trenches, ionizing radiation at doses hundreds of times higher than a lethal human dose, the vacuum of outer space, and can go without food or water for more than 30 years (drying out to only 3% water). They've been found living all over the planet, from mountaintops (above 20,000 ft) to the deep sea (below 13,000 ft), in rainforests, mud volcanos, and even the Antarctic.
